Covering the Election

What an exciting way to spend Election Day! I got to cover the Minnesota DFL Victory Party for Campus Scope and The Aquin. Being able to cover this historic election as a student journalist is something I'll probably never forget. Capturing the emotion of that night was a great honor. We saw people cheering, crying, and even dancing with excitement!

Our night started at about 8:00 PM. Five student journalists from St. Thomas went to the DFL Victory Party and five went to the GOP Victory Party. The moment we got there we started shooting tape and we didn't stop until about 1:00 AM. I got to talk to some interesting people, and rub elbows with media outlets from around the state. Talk about a networking opportunity!

We did run into one problem. We had been there for about a half an hour and some wildly excited person hit our camera with a campaign sign and completely ripped a microphone cable out of it's socket. Thankfully the cable can be fixed, but we had to adjust and think of a different way to get sound. Our adaptation worked and the story turned out great.

All in all, it was a great night full of learning, history, and emotion.
