It happened AGAIN!!

Am I cursed???
Remember last week when I told you all about the rain and how I had to walk from south campus back to north campus in the rain??? Well.....IT HAPPENED AGAIN LAST NIGHT!! AAAHHH!!! I could not believe it! So I got soaked, again. Oh well...soon the rain will turn to snow so I shouldn't complain too much.

BWW turned into Perkins
Well our plans to head to Buffalo Wild Wings to get cheap wings turned into a trip to Perkins instead. The wait time was over an hour at BWW and it was about 11:00 p.m. when we got there so we decided to head across the street to Perkins. It was a lot of fun. We all ordered a bunch of crazy stuff and just ate way too much for the time of day it was. One of my friends got chicken strips, breakfast, and pie! She must have been pretty hungry. I don't think she felt too good after that one.

Seeing it for myself
This week I went to go take a look at the 35W bridge collapse scene. It definitely looks different in person compared to what it looks like on TV. It has been almost two months now since the collapse happened, and there has been a lot of clean-up work done around the scene, but it still strikes a powerful message. Seeing it for myself really changed my perspective on the whole thing.

WEEKEND!!
This Saturday there is another home football game here at St. Thomas. I will be playing in the pep band again, which is always a good time! We'll see how the team does this week. The game is against Bethel University. At the last home football game STAR (St. Thomas Activities and Recreation) gave out free t-shirts and served a free lunch to the students at the game. Hopefully they have free food at this game too. Free food becomes your reason for living when you get to college. Seriously.

Well I have to go head off to class. Have a great weekend everyone!

I will rise....to go get some Buffalo Wild Wings!

Have you ever heard a song and thought it was so good you just couldn't stop listening to it? Well...I have. Currently my iTunes is playing "Rise from the Ashes" by Minneapolis' own Quietdrive. If you want to have a listen for yourself you can click right here. I have been doing homework for about an hour and a half now and I have been listening to that song the entire time. I'm sure pretty soon I will get sick of it and move on to another one, but for now this is just what I want to listen to!

What a day
I left my room this morning at 8:45 and didn't get back until 7:30. I started the day with a quick Scope Board meeting in the Grill. I don't mind it too much because I get to have breakfast during the meeting! After that I had my electronic media class. It was my day to direct the first project. Overall it went pretty well. There were a couple glitches, but that is expected the first time around. After class I had a full Scope meeting where we discussed story ideas and taping dates for the next show. After that it was off to class again! I really don't mind the busy schedule, it makes the day go by pretty fast, plus I like to stay busy.

Happy Birthday Buffalo Wild Wings!
For those of you who don't know, today (9/25) is the 25th birthday of the restaurant chain Buffalo Wild Wings. In honor of their b-day, they are selling wings tonight for 25 cents a piece! A bunch of friends and I are going to hit it up a little later on tonight. How can you pass that up? As a college student, you're ALWAYS looking for a good deal! Today is also the birthday of one of my friends from back home. I always remember it because it is exactly two weeks later than mine. She actually goes to another school up here in the Twin Cities, so we aren't too far away.

Well I better get back to the homework before we go hit up BWW. Have a great night everybody!

Everybody's Workin' for the Weekend

The week in review
What a week! It seems like it just flew by. I hope all of you are having a good first couple weeks of school. Let me tell you about some of the events that happened to me this week.

Let it Rain
On Tuesdays and Thursdays I have a class on south campus. I live on north campus and it is about a seven minute walk from south back to north. Tuesday evening here in the Twin Cities was a little wet. It rained, HARD! I was just getting out of my public speaking class and it started down pouring. Luckily I had an umbrella, but one of my friends in that class didn't. So, we tried to share the little umbrella for a little while, but eventually she gave up and just started walking in the pouring rain. She had quite a long walk back to her car. Then on Thursday night it down poured AGAIN! This time it happened later in the evening but I still was on south and had to walk back to north, and this time I didn't have an umbrella with me. Needless to say when I got back to my room I looked like I had just taken a shower with all my clothes on. I hung them up throughout my room trying to let them dry, and they did...eventually.

First SPJ Meeting
This Thursday was the first SPJ meeting of the year. It was great to see such a good turnout. KSTP 5 Eyewitness News anchor Leah McLean and news producer Amanda Lutz (both UST grads) came and spoke. They gave us some valuable information, and we got some free pizza as well. Can't go wrong with that!

Looking ahead
This week looks to be pretty busy. We are starting to pick topics for our next speeches in public speaking, I have a quiz in Spanish, and a paper due in Theology. But of course, I definitely will not be too busy to keep you updated on my Tommie Blog. Thanks for reading.

It's all about the "Wordplay"

Jason Mraz @ UST
The past couple of days have been full of great things to do here at St. Thomas, starting with the Jason Mraz concert last Thursday. It was a lot of fun, plus it was free for students, which is ALWAYS a good thing! I ran into a friend of mine there who was celebrating her 22nd birthday. Her name is Jill and she was a Tommie Blogger last year. She told me that she reads my blog everyday. Don't know if I believe that one or not, but I thought I would give her a shout out anyway.

First home football game
This Saturday was the first home football game. It was St. Thomas vs. Gustavus. I am a member of the Pep Band and we have a lot of fun at football games! The dance team dances to our music and Tommie the Mascot even gets into the groove. We sit right in the middle of the student section and let me tell you, St. Thomas cheers LOUD...even if the game isn't going in our favor. Oh well, it was a nice day and I even got a little sunburn while at the game.

Well this blog is short but I am at work and better get back to it! Have a great day!

Let the chaos begin!

Activities and meetings and planning
It is only week two here at UST and already I am being thrown back into full speed! Oh well, I like to stay busy, especially if I am doing things I enjoy. As you know I am involved in different clubs and organizations here on campus. Last week I had a board meeting for Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). I am the vice-president of the club. The other board members are good friends of mine. We had a meeting because we had to plan our FREE TRIP TO WASHINGTON, DC!! That's right! The SPJ National Convention is in Washington, DC this year and St. Thomas is paying for us to go! I am really excited! It is going to be a great chance to network and meet professionals in the market. This line of work is very competitive and challenging so it is nice to have a foot in the door so to speak. Another club I am involved in is Campus Scope. We had our first meeting for that on Tuesday and I could not have been happier with the turnout. I think we are going to have a very successful semester and year with that as well.

Class...it's the reason I'm here...right?
Class is going well so far. They are definitely starting to pick up in intensity, which is what I expect from a college level class. I have a math quiz, practice for my first production project, and a speech all happening tomorrow. It will be a full-plate day. But as a great high school teacher of mine once told me, "If you have a full plate, remember that what is on your plate is food, and it will only make you better in the end." I'll try to remember that one tomorrow around 7:00PM when I am all done for the day.

No longer a teenager
I celebrated my 20th Birthday on Tuesday. I know...9/11, but hey it's an easy date to remember for all of you next year. (hint, hint!) Just kidding. I had a great time. I wasn't sure how I would like spending my birthday away from my family, but one of my friends here on campus threw me a surprise party in her room in Selby Hall. We had cupcakes and played Nintendo Wii. Pretty fun I must admit. Then tonight another group of friends took me out to a great place on Grande Ave called Cafe Latte. It was really good and really close to campus! Definitely a plus.

Well I best be getting back to the homework. Talk to you all later!

One week down

It's getting cooler out....FINALLY!
Well the first week of class is gone and hopefully so is the summer heat! I like summer just as much as the next person but living in the res halls when it is 90+ degrees out is not always a treat. Sure if you open your window and get a fan going it is fine but it is nice to finally have cooler temps here at UST. All in all my classes went pretty good. I think I will have a lot of fun this semester, with a lot of work to do as well, but that's expected. I am taking five classes this semester and enjoy the challenge to excel in all of them.

Getting back to work
I also started my on-campus jobs this week. I returned to work as a student assistant in the Registrar's Office. There are some fun people in that office to work with. A lot of different personalities for sure!! I also started giving campus tours again. That is fun because I get to meet a lot of new people, plus get a little exercise walking all around campus! I am also the news director for the monthly news show Campus Scope here on campus. We have our first meeting for that next week. Really excited to get that going again! And of course I continued to write my wonderful Tommie Blog!

Opening Mass
This morning was opening mass at the chapel here at St. Thomas. It is always a nice way to welcome everyone back and start off the new academic year. The Liturgical choir sounded amazing as always and after the service there was free breakfast outside. You can't get much better then that!

That's all for now. As always if you have any questions please feel free to comment or send me an email. I am always glad to share my stories!

Heading back to class

First day
Today was the first day of class here at St. Thomas. With my backpack on, books in hand, and new school shoes on my feet, I headed off to the first class of the semester: THEO 200. The class sounds very interesting, plus it is an Honors section course. I am a member of the Aquinas Scholars Program and special honors classes are open exclusively to Aquinas Scholars. The classes are more discussion based and usually go more in depth on topics. I am excited to see how that class pans out over the course of the semester. My second (and last) class of the day was Spanish. Let me tell you....if there is one thing I struggle at, it is speaking Spanish! My Spanish major friends will attest to this! They know I struggle with it. I am nervous to see how I will perform in the class. I am sure I will be taking advantage of the language tutors A LOT this semester!

Tomorrow! Tomorrow! (anyone? Anne...anyone?)
So my class schedule for tomorrow is a little more rigorous. I have four classes tomorrow. One of the classes is Electronic Media Production. St. Thomas just got a BRAND NEW DIGITAL TV STUDIO on campus! I am very excited to see it and work with it in this class. I also have math, public speaking, and band. Band is a great time here at UST. My band professor/director is Dr. Orzolek (Dr. O for short) and he is HILARIOUS! It is definitely a nice "break" from the normalcy of other classes.

My stomach is growling...
...so I am going to go eat dinner, then it's off to a hall meeting, then the homework begins! Until next time...

Last weekend of the summer

It is Labor Day weekend, and the last weekend of the summer for me. Class starts on Wednesday and I am getting more and more ready for it the closer it gets. But before classes start I decided to go out and have some fun before they do.

Take me out to the ballgame
On Friday night I went to the Twins game and that was a lot of fun. We had great seats and the Twins won, breaking a four game losing streak! It was my first game this season, plus it was my first night out in the Twin Cities since moving back so it was nice to be out in the "big city" again.

Cookies, roasted corn, and pork chop on a stick
On Saturday I went to the great Minnesota get together...the Minnesota State Fair. That too was a great time. There were so many people there! I had some great things to eat starting with pork chop on a stick. I then moved on to roasted corn, fired green tomatoes, and a bucket of Sweet Martha's Chocolate Chip Cookies. I still have about half the bucket sitting next to me in my res hall now! I saw some great shows, watched a cow give birth, and (of course) attended a live broadcast of WCCO news. That was the best part for me! We got there about 10:30 in the morning and by the time we left we were so sun burnt and tired we were ready to go home, but it was fun anyway.

Well that's all for now. Later!
