On April 3, Tony Blackwell, 23, was shot and killed in Minneapolis. At his funeral a eulogist described two influences that shaped Blackwell’s life: his family and his education at the Southside Family Charter School .

Immersion education enriches all areas of learning

At an elementary school in St. Paul, Minn., students from various backgrounds come together to study math, history and science. But this school is different. Hispanic, Asian, black and white students are listening to lessons, speaking and writing in the most commonly spoken language in the world – Mandarin Chinese.

Harvard is now affordable for low-income families

Four years ago Harvard University created a financial aid system that will allow students of low-income families to attend the school for free. Some other Ivy League schools like Princeton and Yale are following this system, but most colleges and universities have not signed on.

When St. Paul-based Graywolf Press started business in 1974 its first book was hand-set and hand-printed on treadle-operated machines. The process took six months. Within four months, all 1,500 copies of Tess Gallagher’s Instructions to the Double were sold.
