Toxic Workplace! - Presentation and Book Signing, June 25, 2009

Dr. Mitch Kusy and Dr. Elizabeth Holloway, authors of Toxic Workplace! Managing Toxic Personalities and Their Systems of Power (2009, Jossey-Bass), will be on campus for a presentation and book signing event on Thursday, June 25, 2009. Join these two celebrated authors on this festive occasion and for a wonderful reunion with Mitch.

5 p.m., Schulze Hall, Mpls campus

“The day this person left our company is considered an annual holiday!” This quote from Kusy & Holloway’s two-year research on toxic personalities echoes their impact on organizations. They are profit saboteurs who undermine workplace well-being and productivity. And during economic downturns, the “perfect storm” emerges in which their “shadow” side is exacerbated, infecting others.

Their national study of more than 400 leaders included in-depth interviews and an 82-item online survey, indicating a whopping 94 percent have worked with a toxic person! Learn how to create systems of respectful engagement with NO pitbulls, prima donnas, chameleons who kiss up & kick down, or “stars” who get away with tyranny!

The complete results of this study, including the three types of toxic behaviors and a systems approach for intervening, may be found in their new book at: www.toxicpersonalities.com.

Servant Leadership Forum on April 21

When leaders serve themselves instead of those who have entrusted them to lead, it can result in the problems we are seeing on Wall Street. What is the purpose of leadership? Does it evolve as the times change? What is the role of leadership in creating high performance organizations built on enduring ethical cultures?

Please join us on Tuesday, April 21 for a public forum focused on Servant Leadership where we will explore the concept of servant leadership and its application in the turbulent times we face today.

The forum will begin with Ron James – President and CEO of the Center for Ethical Business Cultures, sharing his thoughts on Ethical Culture: The Connection to Servant Leadership. Following James’ remarks, Kent Keith – CEO of the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, will lay the foundation for The Case for Servant Leadership. Founded in 1964, the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership is an international non-profit organization advancing the “understanding and practice of servant leadership” and is credited with coining the phrase “servant-leader” that launched the servant leadership movement.

Elective Track Info Sessions – February 23-26 and March 2-5

Selecting elective courses is a critical component of your UST MBA coursework. In order to facilitate course planning, Elective Track Information Sessions will be offered for Full-time and Evening UST MBA students February 23 - 26 and March 2 - 5. The Entrepreneurship, Accounting, Grad Programs in Software, Decision Sciences, Finance, Marketing, Management and Economics departments will present information about their courses from 5-5:45 pm on one day during those two weeks. Department chairs or senior faculty will tell you about the electives offered in their departments. In addition, they will tell you about potential career options and what courses might be helpful to students interested in those careers. Final information about which department will present on which night will be forthcoming. Be sure to check your UST email.

As a student, you don’t necessarily take all your electives in one subject area. You choose your electives by determining your career goals and identifying the gaps in your current background and skills. You can then choose courses that will complement your work and educational backgrounds to prepare for your future career. In light of this, information will be provided about why someone in an elective track in one area might benefit from taking a course or two in another area. For example, how would someone in marketing benefit from entrepreneurship classes?

Finally, there will be time for your questions. We look forward to seeing you during those two weeks!

Minneapolis Campus, 5:00-5:45 p.m.

Health Care UST MBA Workshop Series: Author Dr. Guy Clifton, Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 4:30 p.m.

In partnership with Senator Dave Durenberger and the National Institute of Health Policy, the University of St. Thomas is proud to welcome Dr. Guy Clifton to campus to discuss his new book, Flatlined: Resuscitating American Medicine, which was released on January 30, 2009.

Arguing that a lack of coordinated care and quality medical practice benchmarks result in high levels of redundancy and ineffectiveness, Dr. Clifton proposes that the key to reducing health care costs, improving quality and financially protecting the uninsured is to reduce wastefulness. In his book and in his presentation, Dr. Clifton will offer solutions for achieving success.

Multicultural Forum - March 3-4, 2009

“Diversity’s Challenge: Achieving True Inclusion” is the theme of the 21st annual Multicultural Forum on Workplace Diversity to be held at the St. Paul RiverCentre March 3 and 4, 2009. Co-hosted by the UST Opus College of Business and the Twin Cities chapter of the National Black MBA Association, the Forum is presented by General Mills along with support from more than 60 other companies and organizations.

Anyone who manages, works with or markets to a diverse clientele (is anyone not included?) is encouraged to attend and learn. Mark Your Calendar for the Opus Distinguished Speaker, David Brooks – May 5, 2009

In December 1997, Opus Corporation funded an endowment at the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business to develop an international speakers program. Today, the Opus Distinguished Speakers Program brings nationally recognized leaders of business, government and academia to campus for periods of up to five days. Those leaders invited to serve as Opus Speakers are chosen for their outstanding accomplishments, public service and character.

The purpose of the program is to expose students and faculty to the latest ideas and forces that are shaping American and international business. Leaders and executives, who face these issues daily, provide significant educational enrichment that complements the in-class curriculum. In addition, the program enhances the reputation of the business school by affording the greater community access to the visiting scholar.

David Brooks, author and columnist with the New York Times, has agreed to serve as the 2009 Opus Distinguished Speaker. Mr. Brooks will be on campus Tuesday, May 5. While here he will meet with our students and then deliver a public presentation in the evening. This event is free and open to the public.

Please watch for more information as we get closer to the event.

Guy Clifton to campus to discuss his new book, Flatlined: Resuscitating American Medicine, which is scheduled to be released on January 30, 2009.

Following his presentation, Dr. Clifton will be joined by a “reactor panel” for discussion and Q&A. The panel will react to Dr. Clifton’s remarks and provoke discussion to relate the policy recommendations to real management responses.

Guy L. Clifton, M.D. is a neurosurgeon, clinical investigator, administrator and health policy advocate. He is the Runnells Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and has been frequently included in Best Doctors of America. A 2006–2007 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow, he is now devoting himself full-time to health policy reform.

“Reactor Panel” will feature:
• Sanne Magnan, MD, PhD: Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health and former president of the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI)
• Brent Asplin, MD: Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine at Mayo Clinic; formerly department head, Emergency Medicine, at Regions Hospital
