Nonprofit Seminar Series

Change Options and Business Decisions for your Organization and Programs

Wednesday, April 8, 2009, 9–11:30 a.m.
The Great Room, Opus Hall, University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis, MN
Cost: Free

In the first of three free seminars designed to respond to nonprofit needs, expert Craig Binger will help you clarify your options for program changes, organizational redirection, business choices and implementation steps.

Could you expand or consolidate? Acquire or dispose? Explore fiscal sponsorship or other partnership? Merge or collaborate? This seminar will help you to define the terms, discern your options, anticipate unintended consequences and know the drivers for striking a deal.

Craig Binger, St. Thomas adjunct faculty and former Wilder Foundation executive, has 30 years of experience leading major organizational change initiatives. This leadership activity results from both external environment and internal organizational drivers for organizational redirection, effectiveness and efficiency. His skill set includes the entire range of change leadership action - from directly leading the process, to co-leading or coordinating the efforts of a team, to providing facilitation and consultation to others in a leadership role.

Please visit the Center for Nonprofit Management online for more information.

BETH706 - Great Books

The Great Books Seminar: Great Thinkers who Shaped Business Civilization

http://www.stthomas.edu/business/about/ethics/greatbooks.html

This one-week, three-credit course is based on the world-renowned Aspen Institute Executive Seminar. It uses selected writings of great classic and contemporary thinkers as a beginning point for an intensive, focused discussion with peers on the enduring ideas and ideals of world civilization, the problems and opportunities of today and the issues to be faced in the years ahead. In a sense, the readings function as case studies in leadership and leadership values.

The readings revolve around such universal human concerns as justice, rights, liberty, equality, power, leadership, democracy, and community. Discussion and debate are spirited as students get to know one another in a retreat-like environment.

The Great Books Seminar is coordinated by Dr. Kenneth Goodpaster.

FINC717 - Aristotle Fund – Application Due March 30

Aristotle Fund Application 2009-2010

Dear Evening UST MBA Students,

I wanted to make sure you were aware of a special opportunity for UST MBA students interested in finance and investment management.

The Aristotle Fund is a student-managed investment fund and the unique learning vehicle for the UST MBA elective course FINC 717: Investment Fund Management. It provides finance-focused Full-time and Evening UST MBA candidates with an exceptional hands-on experience – managing a $2 million investment fund.

Every year a group of MBA students applies for consideration for acceptance into the six-credit elective course. Students who are selected manage an ongoing portfolio of equity securities, selecting, analyzing and incorporating new stocks and divesting others within the context of their policy mandate. In addition, the students are responsible for a variety of communications pertaining to the performance of the fund, for which the fund’s Web site serves as the primary forum. The fund is currently operated as a mid-cap equity blend, and is overseen by a UST board of advisors, an array of qualified financial professionals working as individual student mentors and a managing professor, Dr. Mary Daugherty.

The Aristotle experience provides students with “real” money to manage and requires serious dedication, focus and time commitment. The students selected for this course will inherit the investment portfolio from the current year's class on September 1, 2009, and will be responsible for the performance of the fund until August 31, 2010. The class meets weekly throughout the academic year including J-term, and some students will continue to meet weekly over the summer to manage the fund. Students selected this spring for the 2009-10 year will be encouraged to observe the current year's class over the summer to prepare for ownership of the portfolio.

Interested? A link to the application information is posted above.. Evening MBA applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and have taken at least five core courses (including FINC600: Financial Management), as well as FINC713: Investments. Please note that application materials are due by March 30.

For more details and background on the fund’s operations, please see the website: http://www.stthomas.edu/business/academicdepts/finance/aristotlefund/.

Please feel free to email me with your questions. I am the advisor contact for the program.

Study Abroad Opportunity for 2009: Business, Law and Ethics in the European Union (BLAW615)

Experience the challenge of negotiating an international contract while exploring the dynamics of global business in the European Union. This course focuses on globalization and its impact on business with a particular emphasis on EU and U.S. business and legal perspectives, ethics and culture. The classroom component of the course begins in Minneapolis and ends in Trier, Germany. In Minneapolis, you will meet German business students via e-mail and begin the process of negotiating a contract.

You will then travel to the heart of the EU - Brussels, Belgium - where you will meet with the German students and learn through on-site interactive visits, cultural immersion, discussion and reflection. This adventure includes meetings with executives from multinational companies, government officials and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and will address business, legal, business ethics and corporate social responsibility issues as well as economic, socioeconomic, political and cultural issues within the European Union and their impact on conducting business in a global economy. The course ends in Trier, Germany, where you will attend classes and finalize your contracts.

The University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business and the Center for Ethical Business Cultures (CEBC) jointly offer this three-credit MBA course.
